The Lakhta Center’s observation deck: discover St. Petersburg from above

Saint Petersburg is a city of domes, canals, and history… and now it’s also home to futuristic skyscrapers. The most iconic one—and the tallest in Europe—is the Lakhta Center, which not only impresses with its design but also boasts an observation platform at 365 meters high. Want to know what it’s like to go up there? I’ll tell you every detail so you can plan your visit hassle-free.

What is the Lakhta Center and why has it become so famous?

The Lakhta Center is a modern and multifunctional complex located in the northwestern area of Saint Petersburg, on the shores of the Gulf of Finland. Its star attraction is a 462-meter (87 floors!) tower, making it the tallest building in Europe, the tallest in Russia, and the northernmost in the world.

But beyond the records, its architecture is a true work of art: the tower twists on its axis like a frozen helix. In fact, its façade is made up of more than 16,000 glass panels, most of which have unique shapes that reflect light as if it were water. It’s like seeing a vertical iceberg in motion.

The highest observation deck in Europe

The main highlight for travelers lies between floors 83 and 86, where the Lakhta Center’s observation platform is located. Taking the high-speed panoramic elevator up there is already quite the experience, but the best part comes when the doors open: 360° panoramic views of Saint Petersburg, the gulf, parks, bridges, and even the masts with the flags of Russia, the USSR, and even the Empire.

From up there, you can see:

  • The Gazprom Arena stadium.
  • The 300th Anniversary Park of Saint Petersburg.
  • The Primorski district.
  • Residential areas, the sea, and even if the day is clear! the silhouette of the historic center in the distance.

What is the visit to the Lakhta Center like?

The experience is not just about reaching the observation deck. By purchasing a ticket, you get a guided tour that starts on the ground floor with exhibits on the history and construction of the building, and then takes you to the upper floors. The full visit lasts about 75 minutes.

During the tour:

  • You go through a security check.
  • You leave your belongings in a locker and your coat in the cloakroom.
  • You receive a radio guide with headphones.
  • You ride the elevator to the observation deck.
  • You have free time to take photos (without tripods or flashes).
  • You learn architectural and engineering facts from the guide.

💡 Important: tours take place in any weather, although if there are low clouds, you might not see much from the top. My advice: pick a clear day and, if you can, go at sunset.
