If you’re planning to cross a land border into Russia, Telegram is one of the best sources of up-to-date information available. While official websites publish schedules and general regulations, Telegram groups offer something no other resource provides: real-time reports from travellers who have just crossed, with actual waiting times, questions asked by border guards, hotel prices near the crossing, exchange rates at border currency offices, and alerts about regulatory changes.
In this guide I’ve compiled and verified the most useful Telegram groups for each Russian land border, organised by route. Most of them are in Russian, but with Telegram’s built-in translator (I explain how to activate it at the end) you can follow the conversations without any problem.
Estonia and Latvia — Russia
Estonia and Latvia are the main entry points into Russia from the EU by land. Queues can exceed 6 hours during holiday periods, and these groups are your best resource:
- t.me/granitsarusestchat — “НИАР чат ГРАНИЦА ИВАНГОРОД”. Over 5,400 members, very active (more than 1,000 online at any time). Travellers share their crossing experience in real time: waiting times, currency regulations, cheap hotels near the crossing with specific prices, and tactical tips. A link to a live webcam of the Narva queue is also frequently shared.
- t.me/esti_narva — “NARVA-IVANGOROD”. Around 2,670 subscribers. One person (“Марина”) posts specific data several times a day: queue times by hour at all three Estonian crossings (Narva, Luhamaa-Shumilkino, Koidula-Kunichina Gora), GoSwift slot availability for cars, euro/rouble exchange rates at Narva currency offices, and weather alerts.
- t.me/estonia_russia — “Россия-Эстония Граница”. Actively moderated chat with an admin who answers questions all day. Covers everything practical about the crossing: which products you can and cannot bring (food, cosmetics, electronics under sanctions), euro regulations (you can bring euros into Estonia but cannot take them out of Estonia towards Russia), insurance, value limits, queue status with hourly updates, and a morning summary with the status of all three crossings including GoSwift booking numbers.
- t.me/shumilkinoluhamaa — “Шумилкино-Luhamaa”. 3,553 members, 28,000+ messages. Organised by separate topics for each border crossing: the three Estonian ones (Ivangorod-Narva, Kunichina Gora-Koidula, Shumilkino-Luhamaa), the four Latvian ones (Burachki-Terehovo, Ubylinka-Grebnevo, Brunishevo-Pededze, Ludonka-Vientuli), and even the closed crossings with Finland. It also has a specific thread for GoSwift bookings. It’s the only group that covers all the Baltic crossings in one place.
Kaliningrad (transit via Poland / Lithuania)
The most complete Telegram ecosystem for any Russian border, managed by the same team of administrators. The main crossings are Grzechotki-Mamonovo 2 and Bezledy-Bagrationovsk.
- t.me/granica_39 — Main chat. Very active (dozens of messages per day). Travellers report in real time: arrival time, departure time, number of cars in queue, processing speed. Also practical help: how to get from Gdansk airport, fuel limits, etc.
- t.me/granica_39_news — News channel and FAQ. Few posts but high quality: regulatory changes at crossings, Lithuania-Belarus border restrictions, consulate closures, sanctions evasion arrests with full details. The serious reference channel of the ecosystem.
- t.me/granica39_adv — Car-sharing board and transport to the border.
Belarus — Russia
Since January 2025, there are six authorised crossings for foreigners between Belarus and Russia. The Belarus route is increasingly popular: nearly 38,000 foreigners visited the country visa-free in the first quarter of 2026 alone.
- t.me/gpkgovby — Official channel of the Belarus State Border Committee. Publishes reliable updates on waiting times, visa-free entry statistics, and crossing regulations. It also operates a multilingual bot (Russian, Belarusian, English) that shows real-time queue information.
- t.me/granica_bypl — “ГраницаBY Беларусь-ЕС”. Over 131,000 members and 117,000 messages — the largest border group in this entire guide. Organised by separate topics for each border crossing: Brest-Terespol (cars and buses), Bruzgi-Kuznica (Grodno), Kamenny Log-Myadininkai (cars and buses), Berestovitsa-Bobrovniki, Benyakoni-Shalchininkai, Grigorovshchina-Paternieki (Latvia), and Kaliningrad (train/bus/plane). It also has a travel companion thread. Posts real-time reports with the number of cars in queue at each crossing. Extremely active.
Georgia — Russia (Upper Lars / Верхний Ларс)
The Upper Lars crossing, on the Georgian Military Highway, has the largest Telegram ecosystem of all Russian borders by number of users. It’s the most popular gateway for international travellers arriving from the Caucasus.
- t.me/verhniy_lars — “ГРАНИЦА ГРУЗИИ” (Georgia Border). Over 61,000 subscribers. Real-time road status, pass openings and closures, weather conditions on the mountain pass, waiting times. Updated several times a day.
- t.me/VerhniyLars — Live chat where travellers share their crossing experience as it happens. Over 80,000 members.
- t.me/vlars_chat — Complementary discussion chat.
- t.me/rus_ge — “ПОПУТЧИКИ РОССИЯ ↔ ГРУЗИЯ” (Travel companions Russia-Georgia). Around 23,700 members. Daily offers from drivers and passengers to share rides between Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Turkey.
How to translate these groups if you don’t speak Russian
Almost all of these groups are in Russian, but Telegram has a built-in translator that works very well. There are two options depending on your version of Telegram:
Free Telegram: message-by-message translation
- Go to Settings → Language and enable “Translate Messages”
- Long-press any message in Russian
- Tap “Translate” from the menu that appears
- Telegram automatically detects it’s Russian and translates it into your language
This works well for reading individual messages, but if you want to follow an entire conversation you have to translate message by message, which is tedious in very active groups.
Telegram Premium: automatic translation of the entire chat
With the Premium subscription (approximately €5/month) you can enable automatic translation of an entire chat. When you open any group, a translation button appears at the top that translates all messages in the chat into your language permanently. You don’t need to tap each message individually.
If you’re going to follow several of these groups daily to prepare your trip, it’s worth the investment for a couple of months.
Search within groups
Tap the magnifying glass icon and search by keyword. Border groups use hashtags to organise information (#нарва, #очередь, #доброеутро). You can filter by date, sender, or content type.
