Are you planning to travel across Russia in your own vehicle? Whether you’re going by car, motorcycle, camper or motorhome, this article explains how to properly apply for a visa, depending on the type of vehicle and the kind of accommodation you choose. The key lies in selecting the right type of visa and knowing how to request the invitation letter (or visa support) required to enter the country.
What visa do I need to travel to Russia in my own vehicle?
Currently, there are two types of visas that you can apply for when traveling to Russia as a tourist:
- Electronic visa (e-visa):
- Applied for online.
- Valid for tourism, business, or cultural events.
- Maximum duration: 16 calendar days.
- No invitation letter or consulate visit required.
- Allows only single entry.
- Useful only for short trips without many regions to cross.
- Regular tourist visa (standard):
- Requires an invitation letter (tourist voucher).
- Applied for via consulate or agency.
- Allows stays of up to 30 or even 90 days with single, double or multiple entries.
- Best option if you’re traveling by road for several weeks or plan to leave and re-enter Russia (for example, through China, Mongolia, Georgia, or Kazakhstan).
Important: the old “auto-tourism visa” no longer exists. Now, all travelers entering with a vehicle must apply for a standard regular tourist visa, but including key vehicle information in the invitation letter, as explained below.
How to request visa-support when traveling with your own vehicle?
The tourist invitation letter is required to apply for the regular visa. If you’re entering Russia with your own vehicle, it must include specific information about your vehicle, depending on your accommodation:
1. If you’re traveling by car or motorcycle and sleeping in hotels:
- Request a standard tourist invitation letter.
- In the form, indicate the hotels where you’ll be staying (they can be real or dummy reservations, as you can change hotels after getting the visa).
- If you’re using iVisa for your invitation, in the field “Special Instructions”, add:
- Vehicle plate number.
- Make and model.
- Vehicle color.
2. If you’re traveling by camper or motorhome and sleeping in your vehicle:
- You also need a standard tourist invitation letter.
- In the section where you’re asked for accommodation:
- Instead of the hotel name, write “Motorhome” followed by the city where you plan to spend the night.
- You can list up to 10 main cities, it’s not necessary to specify all stops.
For example:
Hotel: “Motorhome – Kazan”
Hotel: “Motorhome – Yekaterinburg”
- Also, in the “Special Instructions” field, include the vehicle details (plate, make, color).
This allows the agency to generate a valid voucher that will let you travel through Russia in your camper or motorhome without any issues.
Required documentation to travel to Russia with your own vehicle
In addition to your visa, when entering Russia with your own vehicle, you must carry a set of essential documents. Border officials may ask for any or all of them, so it’s important to have them ready, well organized, and in good condition.
1. Passport
- Valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Russia.
- In good condition, with at least two blank facing pages.
2. Regular tourist visa
- With the invitation letter including the vehicle details if you’re entering with your own transport.
3. Vehicle registration document
- Must be under your name.
- If the vehicle is registered to someone else, you’ll need a signed authorization letter (ideally translated into Russian or English) allowing you to drive and export the vehicle.
4. Vehicle insurance
- Green Card insurance valid for Russia. Most European insurers no longer offer this, so it’s common to buy a temporary Russian insurance (OSAGO) at the border.
- If you already have OSAGO, carry a printed and updated policy.
5. Driver’s license
- International driving permit or national license with a notarized Russian translation if you are not a Russian resident.
In summary
Traveling to Russia with your own vehicle is an exciting adventure, but it requires careful attention to detail when applying for your visa. Here’s a practical summary:
| Vehicle Type | Accommodation | Invitation Letter | Key Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car or motorcycle | Hotels | Standard tourist | Vehicle details in “Special Instructions” |
| Camper or motorhome | In the vehicle | Standard tourist | Use “Motorhome – City” in hotel name field + vehicle details in “Special Instructions” |
Apply for your visa in advance and make sure the invitation letter (visa support) includes the correct vehicle details. Done right, you’ll be able to explore Russia at your own pace, with freedom, and meeting all legal requirements.
