Do UAE citizens need a visa to travel to Russia?
If you’re a citizen of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and planning a trip to Russia, I’ve got good news: you don’t need a visa for short visits!
Important: You must register in advance using the RuID app. This means providing your personal details and biometric data to generate a QR code, which you’ll present at the border when you arrive in Russia. You must do this at least 72 hours before arrival, but it’s best to complete it earlier — you can apply up to 90 days in advance.
Visa exemption for UAE citizens
Thanks to a bilateral agreement between Russia and the UAE, holders of ordinary UAE passports can enter Russia visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
This exemption applies if you’re visiting for:
✅ Tourism
✅ Business
✅ Family visits
✅ Short-term cultural or sports events
👉 You don’t need to apply for a visa in advance or fill out any paperwork before traveling. Simply present your passport at the border.
However, make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from Russia.
No visa required, but some formalities remain
Although no visa is needed, there are still some things to keep in mind:
- Immigration card: When you arrive in Russia, you’ll be given an immigration card to fill out. Keep it with you during your stay — you’ll need to return it when leaving. Here’s more info about it here.
- Registration: If you stay more than 7 working days in the same place, you must register your stay. Hotels usually handle this automatically, but if staying with friends or in a private apartment, your host must do it for you. Find out how here.
Do UAE citizens need travel insurance?
Although not mandatory, I strongly recommend getting travel medical insurance before visiting Russia. Medical treatment for foreigners can be expensive in case of emergencies, and insurance gives you peace of mind.
👉 You can easily buy a Russian-approved policy online here.
When is a visa required?
You won’t need a visa for visits up to 90 days, but you will need to apply for a regular visa if:
❗ You plan to stay longer than 90 days
❗ You’re going to work, study, or live in Russia long-term
In those cases, you’ll need to get an invitation (visa support letter), fill out the official form at https://visa.kdmid.ru/, and apply at a Russian consulate or visa center — see how here.
Final tips
✔️ Always check the most up-to-date travel rules on the official Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
✔️ Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your trip ends.
✔️ Even without a visa, you must still comply with Russian migration rules (immigration card, registration).
