Do Slovak citizens need a visa to enter Russia?
If you are a Slovak citizen, you do need a visa to visit Russia, regardless of the purpose of your trip. Slovakia does not currently have a visa waiver agreement with Russia for ordinary passport holders.
This means you’ll need to obtain a regular visa before traveling, whether it’s for tourism, visiting friends, business, or other purposes.
Also, remember: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your visa’s expiration date.
What visa options are available for Slovak citizens?
Here’s a quick overview of your options:
| Visa Type | Validity | Application Process |
|---|---|---|
| eVisa | ✅ Up to 30 days | Apply online at evisa.kdmid.ru |
| Regular Visa | Varies (30–90 days) | Fill application, visit consulate |
| Visa-Free | ❌ Not available | – |
👉 Good news: Slovak citizens can apply for the Russian eVisa, valid for stays up to 30 days, making short trips much easier.
Traveling with an eVisa
If you’re planning a trip of up to 30 days, the eVisa is the most convenient option. You can apply entirely online from home.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Application is done at evisa.kdmid.ru.
- It’s valid for tourism, business, humanitarian, and cultural purposes.
- You don’t need to visit a consulate or visa center.
- You’ll receive the visa by email as a PDF—just print it or keep it on your phone.
- You don’t need hotel reservations or an invitation.
- All you need is valid travel insurance accepted by Russian authorities (get it easily here).
ℹ️ Important: You can apply starting 86 days before your trip, but no later than 4 days before departure.
Note: The eVisa now grants entry to all of Russia, not just selected regions like Kaliningrad or St. Petersburg as before.
More details in my step-by-step guide here.
Applying for a regular visa
If you need to stay longer than 30 days or your travel purpose doesn’t fit the eVisa categories, you’ll need a regular visa.
Steps:
- Fill the online form at visa.kdmid.ru.
- Obtain an invitation or visa support letter—order one easily here.
- Submit documents at a Russian consulate or visa center—find offices here.
- Wait for processing (usually 1–3 weeks).
- Pick up your visa (a sticker in your passport).
For detailed instructions, see my regular visa guides here.
The most common type is the tourist visa, but you can also apply for business, private, or other categories depending on your visit.
Entry requirements at the border
When you arrive in Russia, you’ll be given an immigration card to fill out (often distributed on the plane). Keep one half with you during your stay. Learn more here.
Also, if you’re staying longer than 7 business days, you must register your stay at a local office (hotels usually handle this automatically). More info here.
Is travel insurance mandatory for Slovak citizens?
Yes! For Slovak citizens, travel medical insurance is mandatory for both the eVisa and regular visa applications.
You’ll need to submit proof of valid insurance when applying for your visa. Make sure it meets Russian requirements—you can get a compliant policy here.
