Do I need a visa to travel to Russia from Mexico?
If you’re a Mexican citizen traveling with a regular passport, you’ll need a visa to enter Russia — whether for tourism, business, or visiting friends and family.
Unlike some neighboring countries, Mexico doesn’t have a visa exemption agreement with Russia for regular passports. However, you have two main visa options depending on the length and purpose of your trip.
Available visa options for Mexican citizens
| Visa Type | Eligible? | Max Stay | Entry Type | Application Method |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| eVisa | ✅ Yes | 30 days | Single entry | Online form |
| Regular visa | ✅ Yes | Varies | Single/multiple | Application form |
| Visa-free | ❌ No | – | – | – |
1️⃣ Electronic Visa (eVisa)
Mexican travelers can apply for an electronic visa for short visits (up to 30 days) for tourism, business, humanitarian or similar purposes.
It is very easy to obtain since you can apply from your home via the Internet and you don’t need to visit any consulate or visa center. However, you can apply as early as 86 days before the start of your trip and the maximum stay is 30 days.
You receive it via email as a PDF file and only need to print it in A4 format or carry it on your mobile device. This type of visa can be for tourism, business, or humanitarian purposes.
You will not need hotel reservations or an invitation. All you will need is a travel insurance accepted by the Russian authorities — although for Mexican citizens it’s not mandatory, just highly recommended.
I’ve prepared a step-by-step guide on how to apply for the eVisa, so make sure to check it out before you start.
2️⃣ Regular visa
If you’re planning to stay longer than 30 days, or your trip’s purpose doesn’t qualify for the eVisa, you’ll need to apply for a regular visa.
The most common regular visa is the tourist visa, although there are also business, private, study, transit, humanitarian, or work visas, depending on the purpose of your trip.
This type of visa must be applied for at Russian consulates or visa centers in Mexico, no later than 90 days before the start of your trip.
Unlike the electronic visa, this is a visa that is attached to your passport and to obtain it, you must have an invitation or visa support letter.
The application form must be filled out at this official site.

Entry requirements
No matter which visa type you choose:
✅ Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the expiration of your visa.
✅ You’ll be required to complete a migration card when arriving in Russia.
✅ If you’re staying longer than 7 business days at the same place, you’ll need to register your stay (hotels usually handle this automatically).
Is travel insurance required?
For Mexican citizens, travel insurance is not mandatory to apply for a Russian visa (either electronic or regular).
However, I strongly recommend having valid travel insurance because medical expenses in Russia can be very costly in case of emergencies.
