It is a city that you cannot miss. You are required to get off the ship \ud83d\ude42 In this article, I\u2019ll explain in detail how to organize your visit to St. Petersburg if you arrive in the city on a cruise ship: visa, customs formalities, travel, itineraries and organized guided tours.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong> (January 2024): Due to international sanctions there are no cruises to St. Petersburg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. INTRODUCTION<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article I\u2019ll explain how to organize a visit to St. Petersburg if you travel to the city on a cruise and I\u2019ll answer some very frequent questions that travelers ask me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visa: <\/strong>How can I visit St. Petersburg for 72 hours without a visa? When is the best time to visit the city with a tourist visa?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Documents: <\/strong>What documents do I need to complete the immigration and customs process at the port terminal?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Travel: <\/strong>How do I get from the port of St. Petersburg to the city center?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sightseeing: <\/strong>What is there to see in St. Petersburg during the time that my cruise ship is at the port?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rusalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Passenger-Port-of-St.-Petersburg-Marine-Facade.jpg\" alt=\"Passenger Port of Saint Petersburg - Marine Facade\" class=\"wp-image-11085\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. VISA: Do I need a visa to visit St. Petersburg if I go there on a cruise?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you arrive in St. Petersburg on a cruise, the first thing you should know is that you can tour the city in two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Without a visa, for 72 hours <\/strong>(visa free) although there are restrictions on what you can do, as I explain below<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>With a tourist visa <\/strong>and no type of restriction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, I\u2019ll explain the difference between one option and the other, as well as the advantages and disadvantages so you can choose the one that suits you best. I wouldn\u2019t say that there is a better or worse option, but that it will depend on each individual\u2019s preferences and personal circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Option 1. Visiting St. Petersburg for 72 hours without a visa (visa-free)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you arrive in St. Petersburg by air or by land (train, bus or car) you will need to obtain a visa beforehand; however, cruise passengers arriving at Russian ports can visit the city for a period of up to 72 hours without needing a visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind, however, that you must comply with some regulations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>First, you have to see the city in a <strong>guided tour licensed by the Russian authorities<\/strong>, which will be with you at all times during your visit to the city. This means that from the moment you leave the ship in the morning (usually about 8) until the moment you return to it (around 5 \u2013 6 pm), you will have to follow the arranged schedule and you will not have the opportunity to visit the city on your own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second, you must <strong>spend the night on the ship<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Third, this regulation applies if you arrive at any of the following ports: <strong> Petersburg<\/strong>, Anadyr, Arkhangelsk, Kaliningrad, Korsakov, Novorossiysk, Murmansk, Sevastopol, Sochi, Vladivostok, Vyborg and Zarubino.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this visa-free tour you have two options<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Purchase the guided tour offered by your cruise, which is usually quite expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purchase one of the guided tours offered by many other local authorized companies through GetYourGuide and they are not that expensive. A special case is if you <a href=\"https:\/\/russiable.com\/travel-russia-without-visa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arrive in St. Petersburg by ferry<\/a>. While <strong>cruise ships<\/strong> are ships to entertain passengers, and a cruise lasts for 1 or 2 weeks, <strong>ferries<\/strong>, on the other hand, are used to only transport passengers (or cargo) from one point to another. There are two cases in which you can enter Russia on a ferry for 72 hours without a visa:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you travel by ferry from Helsinki, Tallinn or Stockholm (with a stop in Helsinki) to St. Petersburg with the <a href=\"https:\/\/stpeterline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter Line<\/a> company you can enter St. Petersburg without a visa for a maximum 72 hours. In this case you will also have to book a guided tour, but unlike cruise passengers who must stay overnight on the ship if they want go into the city without a visa, St. Peter Line passengers have to book a hotel or apartment. during their stay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In addition to St. Peter Line, it is also possible to go into St. Petersburg or Vyborg without a visa by traveling from Lappeenranta with the Finnish company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saimaatravel.fi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saimaa Travel<\/a> and purchasing some of their guided tours<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rusalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ST-PETER-LINE-\u2013-Crucero-sin-visado.jpg\" alt=\"St-peter-line - Cruise without visa\" class=\"wp-image-8334\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Option 2. Visiting St. Petersburg with a tourist visa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to have the freedom to visit the city on your own, then it\u2019s worth it to apply for a tourist visa before taking the cruise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since guided tours without a visa are usually expensive, obtaining a tourist visa can be even cheaper. In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/russiable.com\/getting-russian-visa-usa-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">getting a tourist visa<\/a> is not complicated. For this you will need an invitation (or visa support), which you can get in 5 minutes through a local tour operator, as I explain in this <a href=\"https:\/\/russiable.com\/invitation-russia-cruise-ship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>, since cruise ships do not issue letters of invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advantages<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>You can tour the city freely, without being tied to any guided tour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can enjoy the city at night, highly recommended during the <a href=\"https:\/\/russiable.com\/white-nights-st-petersburg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White Nights<\/a> season, or take the <a href=\"https:\/\/russiable.com\/traveling-between-moscow-st-petersburg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">high-speed Sapsan train<\/a> on your own to get to Moscow in 4 hours and tour the Russian capital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The visit may even be cheaper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>You have to <a href=\"https:\/\/russiable.com\/getting-russian-visa-usa-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">get the visa<\/a> a few weeks before your trip, which will take time and money.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rusalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Example-Invitation-visa-support-Russia-for-sea-cruises.jpg\" alt=\"Example of an invitation to Russia for tourists arriving on a cruise\" class=\"wp-image-11088\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Special cases<\/strong>. Some special cases in which it is necessary to obtain a visa are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you arrive in St. Petersburg on a cruise but want to leave Russia by plane, train or other mode of transportation, then you need a visa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you take a river cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg, you also need to obtain a tourist visa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you miss your cruise ship, then you will need a visa to be able to leave Russia by some alternative means of transportation. Keep in mind that the Russian authorities can take up to 20 days to approve an exit visa, during which time you will have to deal with the costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, keep in mind that if your passport is lost or stolen while you are visiting St. Petersburg, you will not be allowed to return to your ship until you get a new passport through your country\u2019s Embassy or Consulate, so be very careful not to lose your passport<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. ARRIVING BY SHIP: What cruise ships visit St. Petersburg (and at what port do they arrive)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cruise ships that visit Saint Petersburg, do so mainly by sea, coming from other European port cities (Amsterdam, Stockholm, Bergen, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Tallinn, Skagen, etc.). However, there are also river cruises that make the journey between Moscow and St. Petersburg on the Volga River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arriving by sea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most usual way is to arrive in St. Petersburg on a cruise. At present, more than 600,000 passengers come to visit St. Petersburg on a cruise ship, mainly Germans (25% of the total), Americans (19%) and British (10%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main cruise lines that visit St. Petersburg are: Carnival Corporation &amp; plc (43.2%), Royal Caribbean (16%), Norwegian Cruise Line (8.7%) and MSC Cruises (10.8%)<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rusalia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Statistics-Passenger-Port-of-St.-Petersburg-Marine-Facade.jpg\" alt=\"Statistics - Passenger Port of St. Petersburg Marine Facade\" class=\"wp-image-11132\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When your cruise ship is approaching St. Petersburg, the first thing that will catch your attention will be the <a href=\"http:\/\/lakhta.center\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lakhta Center<\/a>, a skyscraper 87 storeys and 462 meters high, which is currently the tallest building in Europe (and the 13<sup>th<\/sup> highest in the world). At the port, take Bus no. 58 which runs every 30 minutes, and in 10-15 minutes it will take you to the nearest Metro station, Primorskaya (green line number 3). The ticket costs 40 rubles. If there are many cruises, there may be a queue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can pre-book it through taxi dispatch centers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/russiable.com\/kiwitaxi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KiwiTaxi<\/a>. In that case your taxi driver will be waiting for you in the terminal with a sign with your name. A trip to the city center can cost about 1,200 rubles. The must-see attractions of St. Petersburg: from the Fortress to the Hermitage<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I would devote the first day to the must-see attractions of St. Petersburg. The first thing you will need is a <a href=\"https:\/\/russiable.com\/tourist-maps-st-petersburg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">map of the city center and its transit system<\/a>. To avoid crowds and queues, it\u2019s best to start the tour from the Peter and Paul Fortress, the city\u2019s original citadel.
