Murmansk
Murmansk is the largest city in the world north of the Arctic Circle and one of the best places on the planet to see the northern lights. The season runs from late August to mid-April, and February is the best month. The auroras are best seen outside the city, in Teriberka, the Khibiny mountains or Lovozero. Give it 3 or 4 days so you have a few nights to play with, because it all depends on clear skies. You get there on a flight of about 2 hours 30 minutes from Moscow, by overnight train or overland from Norway.
